What is a Kraft Paper Slitter Rewinder Machine?A Kraft Paper Slitter Rewinder is an industrial machine designed to convert large, master (jumbo) rolls of kraft paper into narrower, smaller-diameter rolls as required by end-users or for specific packaging machinery. It performs two primary functions: Slitting: Cutting the wide web of kraft paper longitudinally into multiple strips of specific widths. Rewinding: Winding these slit strips onto new, individual cores to create finished, manageable rolls.
A typical kraft paper slitter rewinder consists of the following main parts:
Unwind Stand: Holds the large master roll. It can be a simple shaft or a more sophisticated motorized unit with tension control and automatic web guiding to keep the paper aligned. Tension Control System: Crucial for producing tight, evenly wound rolls. It can be mechanical (dancer rollers), pneumatic, or electronic (load cells) to maintain consistent tension throughout the process. Slitting Unit: The heart of the machine where the cutting happens. There are two main slitting methods: Razor Slitting: Uses a sharp, stationary razor blade to "score and burst" the paper. It's simple and cost-effective but best for lighter-weight papers and may produce more dust. Shear Slitting: Uses a top and bottom circular blade that work like scissors (the top blade "rides" against the bottom blade). This provides a clean, precise cut and is preferred for heavier kraft paper and higher-speed operations.
Spreader / De-curling Bars: Kraft paper has a memory and tends to curl. Spreaders are bowed rollers that gently stretch the edges of the web to remove curls and wrinkles before rewinding, ensuring flat, high-quality rolls. Rewind Shaft: A heavy-duty shaft where the new cores are mounted. The slit strips are wound onto these cores to create the new, narrower rolls. Driving System: Powers the rewind shaft. Can be a central drive (one motor for the whole shaft) or, more commonly on modern machines, a Dual-Drive or Center-Surface Wind system where each individual rewinding station has its own motor. This provides superior tension control, especially when winding different materials or diameters simultaneously. Control Panel (HMI): A human-machine interface (like a touchscreen) where the operator sets parameters like speed, tension, and length. Modern machines often feature programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for automation.
