They are U-shaped or multi-sided paper-based profiles that slide onto the edges of products, sheets (like glass, metal, or plastic), or palletized loads. Their primary functions are:
Protection: Prevent damage from strapping, corner impacts, and abrasion during transit and storage.
Reinforcement: Strengthen the edges of a unit load, preventing collapse.
Stabilization: Help stabilize and align stacked boxes or pallets.
The machinery creates these profiles by forming multiple layers of paper or cardboard into a specific, rigid shape.
The machinery is often categorized by the type of edge protector it produces:
This is the most common type. The final product looks like a "U" or "C" in cross-section.
Machine Process: Similar to an angleboard machine but with a more complex forming head. It laminates multiple layers and uses a series of rollers and guides to form the paper into a U-shape before cutting it to length.
Use Case: Protecting the top and bottom edges of palletized goods where strapping is applied; protecting the edges of sheet materials like MDF, glass, and metal plates.
These produce more complex shapes, such as profiles with four or five sides, offering superior protection that fully encapsulates an edge.
Machine Process: A more advanced version of the U-channel machine. It uses a sophisticated forming head with multiple stages to create the complex folds required for these profiles.
Use Case: High-value, fragile, or sharp-edged products that require maximum protection on all sides of the edge.
As discussed in the previous thread, these produce a simple 90-degree L-shape. They are a subset of edge protector machinery specifically for corners.
Use Case: Protecting the corners of furniture, appliances, and cartons.
The process for a standard U-channel machine is as follows:
Unwinding: Multiple rolls of paper (kraft paper, test liner, or recycled paper) are loaded onto the unwind stands. For continuous production, an automatic splice unit allows for new rolls to be glued to the running web without stopping the machine.
Pre-Heating (Optional): The paper webs may pass through pre-heaters to make the fibers more pliable and improve adhesive bonding.
Gluing & Laminating: Adhesive (typically starch-based or PVA glue) is applied to the paper webs, which are then pressed together in the laminating section. This builds the required thickness and rigidity. The number of layers can vary from 3 to 7 or more.
Profiling & Forming: This is the most critical stage. The multi-layered paper board is guided through a custom-designed forming head. A series of progressively shaped rollers and dies gradually fold the flat board into the final U-channel or other complex profile.
Drying & Curing (Optional): Some machines have a heated drying tunnel to speed up the curing of the adhesive, ensuring the profile holds its shape and gains immediate strength.
Pressurizing & Setting: The formed profile passes through a pressurized section to ensure the glue bonds perfectly and the shape is set.
Cutting to Length: A high-precision, servo-driven cutting unit cuts the continuous profile into pre-set lengths. This can be a flying cut-off system that matches the speed of the moving profile for a clean, square cut.
Stacking & Counting: The finished edge protectors are automatically stacked, counted, and bundled for easy packaging and shipment.
Unwind Stands with Tension Control: For holding and controlling the paper rolls.
Automatic Splicer: For non-stop production.
Gluing System: A precision system for applying adhesive.
Laminating Unit: Where layers are pressed together.
Forming Head / Profiling Section: The heart of the machine, with custom rollers and guides.
Drying Tunnel (if equipped): To cure the adhesive.
Servo-Driven Cutting Unit: For accurate and clean cutting.
PLC & HMI (Human-Machine Interface): For controlling all parameters (speed, length, glue amount).
Stacking and Discharge Conveyor.
