How an Edge Coloring Machine Works:

1. Clamping: A stack of paper (e.g., a full book block, a stack of business cards) is firmly and evenly clamped in a vice or holder. A perfectly even and perpendicular edge is crucial for a good result.

2. Priming/Sanding (Optional): The edge may be lightly sanded to create a smooth, porous surface for better color adhesion.

3. Application: The clamped edge is dipped into a tray of specialized liquid ink, edge paint, or is brushed against a rotating foil applicator (for gilding).

4. Drying: The ink or paint is allowed to air dry or is gently heat-set. For foil gilding, an adhesive is first applied, the foil is transferred, and then it's burnished.
