It is a converting machine used to transform large master rolls (or "jumbo rolls") of paper into narrower, smaller, finished rolls ready for end-use. This process is fundamental in the paper, packaging, printing, and converting industries.

1. Slitting: Precisely cutting the wide paper web longitudinally into multiple strips of desired widths.

2. Rewinding: Re-rolling these strips onto new cardboard cores with controlled tension, hardness, and perfect edge alignment.

Material flows through the machine in this typical order:

1. Unwind Stand: Holds the master roll. Can be shaftless (for faster loading) or shafted. Equipped with a braking system for initial tension control.

2. Tension Control System: A critical subsystem (often using dancer rollers or load cells) that maintains consistent web tension from unwind to rewind, ensuring uniform roll hardness.

3. Web Guide (Edge or Line Guide): Automatically corrects any lateral movement of the paper web to ensure straight, accurate slitting and prevent edge waste.

4. Slitting Unit: The cutting mechanism. The type chosen depends on the paper grade.

5. Web Splitting & Spreading: Elements like bowed rollers or spreader bars separate the slit strips to prevent interweaving and remove air for a tight rewind.

6. Rewind Unit: Where the finished rolls are created. The type defines the machine's capabilities.

7. Shaft Handling & Unloading: Systems (manual, pneumatic, or automatic) to insert cores and remove finished rolls.
