What is a Paper Tube Making Machine?

A paper tube making machine is an industrial device that automatically winds and bonds multiple layers of paper (or other web-like materials) onto a mandrel to produce cylindrical paper products. These products are commonly known as paper tubes, paper cores, or paper cans.

Types of Paper Tubes and Their Machines

The machine type is often defined by the product it creates:

  1. Spiral Tube Making Machines:

    • Process: The paper is wound at a precise angle (typically 15-30 degrees) around a mandrel in a spiral pattern.

    • Characteristics:

      • Excellent compression strength and durability.

      • Smooth, continuous seam.

      • Can produce very long tubes.

    • Common Uses: Concrete tube forms, mailing tubes, poster tubes, high-strength industrial cores.

  2. Parallel Tube Making Machines (aka Slat Tube Winders):

    • Process: The paper is wound parallel to the mandrel, with the seams running straight along the length of the tube.

    • Characteristics:

      • Provides excellent "crush" or "burst" resistance for high-speed unwinding.

      • Clean, square edges.

      • Generally faster production for standard sizes.

    • Common Uses: Cores for textiles, films, foils, tapes, and paper rolls.

While designs vary, a standard machine consists of these core parts:

      1. Unwind Stand(s): Holds the large rolls of paper (called "parent rolls") that feed the machine. Machines can have multiple stands for different paper grades or layers.

      2. Gluing System: Applies a precise, consistent layer of adhesive (water-based, hot melt, or synthetic) to the paper. This can include pre-gluing and main gluing units.

      3. Forming Mandrel: A solid, polished, cylindrical steel bar around which the paper is wound. It determines the inner diameter (ID) of the finished tube.

      4. Forming Belt / Driving Belts: A series of belts that wrap around the forming paper layers, applying pressure to ensure tight winding and proper bonding as the tube moves along the mandrel.

      5. Cutting Unit: Cuts the continuous tube into specific lengths. This can be:

        • Flying Cut-off Saw: A saw that moves synchronously with the tube to make a clean, square cut without stopping production.

        • Shear Cutter: Uses a blade for a scissor-like cut, often for smaller diameters.

      6. Control System: A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) that allows the operator to set parameters like length, speed, and glue amount. Modern machines are highly automated.

      7. Discharge/Drying Conveyor: A conveyor that carries the freshly cut tubes away, often through a drying or curing section to set the adhesive fully.

The Paper Tube Manufacturing Process (Step-by-Step)

      1. Loading: Large parent rolls of paper (kraft, recycled, specialty) are loaded onto the unwind stands.

      2. Web Feeding: The paper webs are fed from the stands into the machine, passing through tension control and guiding systems.

      3. Gluing: Each paper layer passes through the gluing system, where adhesive is applied to one side.

      4. Winding: The glued paper webs are fed onto the rotating mandrel. The forming belts apply pressure, winding the layers tightly around the mandrel to form a continuous, solid tube.

      5. Curing (On-Machine): The heat from friction and the pressure of the belts begin the bonding process as the tube moves down the mandrel.

      6. Cutting: Once the tube reaches the desired length, the flying cut-off saw precisely cuts it.

      7. Ejection & Drying: The cut tubes are ejected onto a conveyor, where they continue to dry and cure before being packaged or sent for further processing (e.g., printing, capping).

Applications of Paper Tubes and Cores

The products from these machines are ubiquitous in industrial and consumer markets:

      • Packaging:

        • Food Packaging (chip cans, coffee canisters, frozen juice cores, cookie containers)

        • Mailing and Shipping Tubes

        • Cosmetic Containers

      • Industrial Cores:

        • Cores for winding: plastic film, aluminum foil, textiles, carpet, paper, labels, adhesive tape.

        • Concrete Sonotubes® for construction pillars.

      • Specialty Products:

        • Poster and blueprint tubes.

        • Firework casings.

        • Cores for electrical and fiber-optic cables.
