It's a machine designed to take large, master rolls (jumbo rolls) of kraft paper—often 1-3 meters wide—and convert them into narrower, smaller rolls of specified width and diameter for end-use in packaging, printing, or further processing.
The process is fully automated, integrating slitting (cutting lengthwise) and rewinding (re-rolling onto new cores) into one continuous operation.
Unwind Stand: Holds the heavy master roll. Automatic versions include a hydraulic or pneumatic lifting system, web tension control (crucial for kraft paper), and often an automatic splicing unit to join a new master roll to the tail of the expiring one without stopping the machine.
Web Guide System: Ensures the paper edge is aligned correctly before slitting to prevent waste.
Slitting Section: This is where the width is determined.
Razor Slitting: Simple, low-cost knives for lighter-weight kraft. It's a crush-cut method.
Shear (Circular Knife) Slitting: Uses a pair of upper (motorized) and lower knives for a scissor-like cut. This is the preferred method for heavy-duty or multi-ply kraft paper as it gives a clean, dust-free edge and handles higher tensions.
Rewinding Section: The heart of the automation.
Drum Rewinder (Surface Winding): The paper is wound onto new cores pressed against a central drum. This is simple and excellent for tight, dense rolls.
Shaftless Center Rewinder: The new cores are mounted on individual chucks (arms) and wound from the center out. Allows for differential rewinding (adjusting tension per strip) and is ideal for making large-diameter, high-tension kraft rolls. Most modern automatics use this method.
Automatic Core Loading & Ejection:
Cores (cardboard, plastic) are automatically fed and positioned onto the rewinding shafts.
Once the preset roll diameter is reached (measured by a sensor), the finished rolls are automatically ejected onto a conveyor or unloading table.
Control System: A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) touchscreen allow the operator to set all parameters: slit widths, roll length/diameter, tension profiles, and production speed.
High Speed & Efficiency: Can run at 200-600+ meters/minute, dramatically increasing output.
Precision & Consistency: Digital controls ensure every finished roll is identical in width, diameter, and hardness (tension).
Reduced Labor: One operator can manage the entire process (loading master rolls, monitoring, unloading finished rolls).
Material Saving: Precise tension control and slitting minimize edge trim and paper waste.
Safety: Enclosed guards and automated handling reduce manual interaction with cutting parts.
Data Logging: Tracks production meters, efficiency, and fault diagnostics.
Kraft Paper Bags: Shopping bags, cement bags, flour sacks.
Laminating Base: For making multi-layer flexible packaging.
Protective Wrapping: For furniture, pallets, or in-process protection.
Core & Tube Winding: Spiral and convolute tubes.
Further Converting: Into sheets, pouches, or specialty printed products.
