What is a Paper Tube Making Machine?A paper tube making machine is an industrial device that automatically produces cylindrical containers and cores by winding multiple layers of paper (or other web-like materials) onto a mandrel with the use of adhesive. How Does a Paper Tube Making Machine Work? (The Process) The most common type is the spiral winding machine. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of its operation: Unwinding: Large rolls of paper (the "parent rolls") are mounted on unwinding stands. Multiple strips of paper (usually 2 to 6) are fed into the machine simultaneously. Gluing: The paper webs pass through a glue application system, which evenly coats one side of each strip with a specific adhesive (water-based, hot melt, etc.). Spiral Winding: The glued paper strips are fed onto a rotating central mandrel (a metal rod that defines the tube's inner diameter). The paper is wound around the mandrel at a precise, continuous angle (the "spiral"). Each strip overlaps the previous one, building the tube's wall thickness and strength. Heating & Drying (Optional): For certain adhesives, a heating tunnel or infrared dryer is used to quickly cure the glue and set the tube's shape. Cutting: As the continuous tube emerges from the mandrel, a flying circular saw or a precision cutter cuts it to pre-set lengths. The cutter moves synchronously with the tube to ensure a clean, square cut without stopping production. Ejection: The finished, cut tubes are automatically ejected from the machine onto a conveyor or collection table.
Types of Paper Tube Making MachinesThere are two primary manufacturing methods: 1. Spiral Tube Winding MachinesProcess: As described above. Paper is wound at an angle (typically 45-85 degrees). Characteristics: High Speed & Continuous Production: Ideal for long runs of the same diameter. Excellent Strength: The cross-grain structure provides high crush resistance and durability. Smooth Inner Surface: Good for high-speed unwinding of films and foils.
Applications: Cores for plastic films, aluminum foil, textiles, adhesive tapes, and packaging tubes.
2. Parallel Tube Winding Machines (Convolute)Process: A pre-cut sheet of paper is wound directly around the mandrel in a straight, parallel fashion (0-degree angle), layer upon layer. Characteristics: Thicker Walls: Can produce tubes with very thick walls more easily. Printed Outer Layers: Excellent for high-quality printed packaging, as the graphics are not skewed. Generally Slower: than spiral winding.
Applications: High-end cosmetic and product packaging, mailing tubes, thick-walled industrial cores.
