It's an industrial machine designed to take a large, master (or "jumbo") roll of paper and transform it into multiple narrower rolls of a specified width and diameter, ready for end-use or further processing. The core functions are slitting (cutting) and rewinding (re-rolling onto new cores).
The process is typically continuous and follows this flow:
Unwind Stand: Holds the large master roll. Can be shaftless or with shafts, and often includes tension control brakes to maintain consistent web tension.
Web Guide System: Ensures the paper web runs straight into the machine, critical for accurate slitting.
Slitting Section: This is where the cutting happens. There are two main methods:
Razor/Shear Slitting: A circular blade (razor) presses against a hardened anvil roll or against another blade (shear cut). Ideal for lighter papers, films, and foils. Produces a very clean, dust-free edge.
Score (Crush) Slitting: A male blade presses into a female blade on a rubber-covered roll, "crushing" the material along the cut line. Best for heavier papers, boards, and materials where a razor might chip. Can generate more dust.
Rewind Section: The slit strands are separated and rewound onto individual new cores (usually cardboard or plastic). This is the heart of the machine's sophistication, with two primary rewinding modes:
Center Surface Rewind (Drum Rewind): The new cores are driven by contact with a large, rotating drum. Excellent for tension-sensitive materials and producing hard, dense rolls. Most common for paper.
Center Wind (Shaft Rewind): Each new roll is driven independently by its own shaft. Offers more control over individual roll hardness but is more complex and expensive. Common for films and specialty materials.
Tension Control System: Perhaps the most critical subsystem. It uses electronic or mechanical brakes, dancers, and sensors to maintain perfect tension from unwind to rewind, preventing wrinkles, telescoping, or breaks.
Drives & Control Panel: Modern machines use PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and touchscreens for setting parameters like speed, length, tension, and for diagnostics.
These machines are used across numerous industries:
Printing & Publishing: Creating rolls for web offset, flexographic, or digital presses.
Packaging: Slitting kraft paper, linerboard, label stock, and flexible packaging materials.
Stationery & Office Supplies: Producing rolls for cash registers, adding machines, notepads, etc.
Converting: Preparing materials for further processes like coating, laminating, or die-cutting.
Specialty Papers: Slitting materials like carbonless paper, photographic paper, insulation, and composites.
A1: It unwinds large jumbo paper rolls, slits the paper web into multiple custom narrow widths, then rewinds the cut paper onto new cores to produce finished small rolls ready for end use or further converting.
A2: Razor/shear slitting and score (crush) slitting. Razor slitting delivers clean dust-free edges for light paper, film and foil. Score slitting suits heavy paper and board, though it may create more cutting dust.
A3: Center surface rewind (drum rewind) relies on contact with a rotating drum, ideal for tension-sensitive paper to make dense hard rolls. Center wind (shaft rewind) drives each roll shaft separately for independent hardness control, more suitable for films and specialty materials.
A4: Tension control keeps consistent web tension from unwind to rewind. It effectively avoids common defects such as wrinkles, roll telescoping and paper breaks, ensuring stable production and good finished roll quality.
A5: It is widely applied in printing & publishing, packaging, stationery & office supplies, general paper converting, and specialty paper sectors, for kraft paper, linerboard, carbonless paper, label stock and more.
