Napkin Converting Machine (The Manufacturing Plant Stage)

This is what most people refer to as a "napkin making machine." It transforms the jumbo tissue rolls into finished, folded, and packaged napkins.

Key Characteristics:

• Type: An automated converting line.

• Scale: Ranges from small semi-automatic machines to high-speed fully automatic lines. Cost: Tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of USD.

• Raw Material: Jumbo rolls of tissue paper from a tissue mill.

• Output: Finished napkins (flat, folded, interfolded) in polybags or boxes.

Main Process Stages in the Converting Line:

• Unwind Stand: Holds the jumbo roll and controls tension.

• Flexographic Printing Unit (Optional): Adds colored patterns or borders.

• Embossing Unit: Two engraved steel rollers press together to add texture and pattern. For multi-ply napkins, this also bonds the plies.

• Perforating & Cross-Cutting Unit: A rotary cutter perforates and cuts the continuous web into individual napkin blanks.

• Folding Unit: Folds the napkin (e.g., classic 1/4 fold, 1/2 fold, C-fold, multifold). This is a critical and complex module.

• Counting & Stacking Unit: Counts a precise number of napkins (e.g., 50, 100, 200) and forms a neat stack.

• Packaging Unit: Automatically wraps the stack in polyethylene (poly) film or paper. More advanced lines can insert napkins into cardboard boxes.

• PLC Control Panel: The brain of the machine, controlling speed, counting, and synchronization.

Types of Napkin Converting Machines

• Fully Automatic High-Speed Lines: Integrated from unwind to boxing. Speed: 200-400 packs per minute. Requires minimal labor.

• Semi-Automatic Machines: Often involve manual feeding of pre-cut sheets or manual packaging. Slower but more affordable.

• Servo-Driven Machines: Modern, precise, energy-efficient, and easier to set up for different napkin sizes.

• Mechanical (Cam-Driven) Machines: Robust, traditional, but noisier and harder to changeover.
