It is an industrial machine that produces long, cylindrical tubes and cores by continuously winding multiple layers of paper (or other materials) in a spiral (helical) pattern around a central rod called a mandrel. This method creates an exceptionally strong and seamless tube.
The entire process is continuous and automated. The core principle is that paper is fed at an angle to a rotating mandrel.
Unwinding: Multiple rolls of paper (called "slitter reels") are mounted on an unwinding stand. The paper can be kraft, laminated, or specialty paper.
Gluing: Each strip of paper passes through a precision gluing system, which applies a thin, continuous bead of adhesive (like PVA glue) along one edge.
Spiral Winding (The Key Step):
The glued paper strips are fed onto a rotating steel mandrel. The diameter of this mandrel defines the inner diameter of the tube.
Because the paper is fed at a precise angle (e.g., 45-85 degrees), it wraps around the mandrel in a spiral.
The glued edge of one strip bonds securely to the adjacent strip, creating a strong "lock-seam." Multiple layers are built up to achieve the desired wall thickness and strength.
Cutting: As the continuous, solid tube emerges from the winding head, a synchronized cutting system (like a rotary cutter or a flying saw) slices it into pre-set lengths.
Drying & Ejection: The cut tubes move along a conveyor through a drying section, allowing the glue to fully cure. They are then ejected, ready for packaging or further processing (like printing, grooving, or capping).
Regardless of type, most machines share these core components:
Unwind Stand: Holds the large rolls of paper (parent reels), often with automatic tension control.
Paper Guidance System: A series of rollers that direct the paper to the winding head.
Gluing System: Applies a precise amount of adhesive (PVA, hot melt, etc.) to the paper. This is critical for tube integrity.
Winding Head & Mandrel: The core of the machine where the tube is formed. The mandrel defines the inner diameter (ID) of the tube.
Cutting Unit: Cuts the continuous tube to the required length. Can be a rotary cutter, flying saw, or guillotine.
Control System (PLC & HMI): The computerized brain for setting length, speed, glue amount, and monitoring production.
Drying & Ejection System: A conveyor that allows the adhesive to cure before the tubes are collected.
The products from these machines are essential in numerous industries:
Packaging: Tubes for shipping posters, documents, textiles, and food products (e.g., chip tubes).
Industrial Cores: The central core for winding paper, plastic film, foil, labels, textiles, and carpet.
Construction: Sonotube®-style concrete column forms.
Consumer Goods: Cores for paper towels, toilet paper, and wrapping paper.
Specialty Products: Tubes for fireworks, electrical insulation, and medical applications.
