It is an industrial machine that automates the production of cylindrical paper and cardboard tubes, cores, and cones. These are used for everything from winding materials (like fabric, film, and tape) to protective packaging (for posters, artwork, or shipping).
The process varies slightly between machine types, but the fundamental steps are:
Unwinding: Large rolls of paper (kraft, laminated, recycled) are loaded onto the unwind stand. Multiple plies (layers) are often used for strength.
Gluing: An adhesive application system precisely coats the paper with glue (water-based PVA, hot melt, or dextrin). Modern machines have servo-controlled glue systems for accuracy.
Forming: This is the critical step where the paper is shaped into a tube.
A set of forming belts and a central mandrel (a steel rod of the desired inner diameter) wrap the glued paper layers tightly around the mandrel.
Spiral Winding (for Spiral Tubes): The paper web is fed at a continuous angle, creating a spiral seam. The tube is cut to length after the spiral is formed.
Parallel Winding (for Parallel Tubes): The paper is wound edge-to-edge parallel to the tube axis, creating a smooth edge, often for high-precision cores.
Curing & Drying: The glued tube travels through a drying section (heated or at ambient temperature) to set the adhesive.
Cutting: A precision rotary saw or shear cutter cuts the continuous tube into pre-set lengths.
Ejection/Collection: Finished tubes are ejected, stacked, and bundled for packaging.
Industrial Cores: Winding paper, plastic film, foil, textiles, adhesive tapes, carpets, and wire.
Packaging: Mailing and shipping tubes, protective packaging for prints, posters, and blueprints.
Construction: Concrete forming (Sonotubes®), columns.
Consumer Goods: Cores for toilet paper, paper towels, wrapping paper, food packaging (e.g., Pringles cans, composite cans).
Specialty: Yarn cones for textiles, fireworks casings, molds.
