What is a Paper Tube Making Machine?

The paper tube making machine is an industrial system that transforms rolls of paper (like kraft, test liner, or chipboard) into cylindrical tubes and cores. It does this by spirally winding multiple layers of paper onto a central mandrel and bonding them with

adhesive to create a strong, rigid structure.

They are essential in manufacturing a wide range of products, from simple mailing tubes to high-strength industrial cores.

How It Works: The Step-by-Step Process

The process is continuous and highly automated:

  1. Unwinding: Large "parent" rolls of paper are mounted on unwind stands. Modern machines often have multiple stands to allow for different paper grades or colors.

  2. Paper Guidance & Splicing: The paper webs are guided through rollers. An automatic splicer joins the end of an expiring roll to the start of a new one without stopping the machine, ensuring continuous operation.

  3. Gluing: The paper passes through a precision gluing unit, which applies a controlled amount of adhesive (like PVA glue) to one side.

  4. Spiral Winding (The Core Action): The glued paper is fed onto a rotating steel mandrel. The paper is wound at a specific angle, building up the tube wall layer by layer. This creates the characteristic spiral seam.

  5. Cutting: Once the tube on the mandrel reaches the pre-set length, a high-speed cutter (rotary or saw) cleanly severs it without interrupting the winding process.

  6. Ejection and Drying: The cut tube is ejected from the mandrel and conveyed into a drying oven. The oven cures the adhesive, giving the tube its final strength and rigidity.

  7. Finishing (Optional): Tubes can be further processed by printing, punching holes, adding end caps, or slotting.

Key Components of the Machine

  • Unwind Stands: Hold the large paper rolls.

  • Automatic Splicer: Critical for non-stop production.

  • Gluing System: Includes a tank, pump, and applicators for precise adhesive control.

  • Mandrel: The central shaft that defines the tube's inner diameter.

  • Cutting Unit: A high-precision cutter for accurate lengths.

  • Control System (PLC & HMI): The brain of the machine, controlling speed, length, glue application, and diagnostics.

  • Drying Oven: Cures the adhesive for maximum strength.

Main Types of Paper Tube Machines

There are two primary winding technologies:

  1. Spiral Winding Machines

    • How it works: Paper is wound at a consistent angle (e.g., 45° to 85°) to the mandrel's axis.

    • Advantages: Versatile, good all-around strength, excellent crush resistance. Can produce a very wide range of diameters.

    • Applications: Most common type. Used for mailing tubes, packaging, posters, concrete sonotubes, and many industrial cores.

  2. Parallel Winding Machines (Longitudinal)

    • How it works: The paper is wound with its edge parallel to the mandrel's axis, resulting in a straight seam.

    • Advantages: Superior bending strength and rigidity, very smooth surface finish.

    • Applications: Used for high-performance industrial cores that must withstand high speeds and torque, such as cores for plastic films, textiles, and foil.

Applications of Paper Tubes & Cores

The products are everywhere in industry and commerce:

  • Packaging: Mailing tubes, containers for food (like chips and coffee), and promotional materials.

  • Construction: Sonotubes for forming concrete pillars and columns.

  • Textiles: Cores for winding fabrics, yarn, and carpets.

  • Paper & Film Industry: Cores for toilet paper, kitchen rolls, plastic wrap, and label stock.

  • Specialty Products: Cores for capacitors, electrical insulation, and fireworks.
