The paper tube making machine is an industrial system that transforms paper or paperboard (like kraft paper, linerboard, chipboard) into cylindrical tubes and cores. These machines automatically wind multiple layers of paper onto a mandrel using adhesive to create a strong, rigid, and durable tubular product.
They are also commonly known as paper core making machines or cardboard tube making machines.
The process is continuous and can be broken down into several key stages:
Unwinding (De-reeling): Large rolls of paper, called parent rolls, are mounted on unwind stands. A modern machine often has multiple unwind stands to allow for different paper grades or to create layers with specific properties.
Paper Guiding & Spliceing: The paper webs are guided through a series of rollers. An automatic splice unit is crucial for non-stop production; it automatically joins the end of one expiring paper roll to the beginning of a new one without stopping the machine.
Adhesive Application: The paper passes through a gluing unit, which applies a precise and even layer of adhesive (typically PVA or dextrin-based glue) to one side of the paper.
Winding (The Core Process): The glued paper is fed onto a rotating steel mandrel (a long, cylindrical bar). The paper is spirally wound around the mandrel, building up the required wall thickness layer by layer. The spiral winding is what gives most paper tubes their
characteristic seam.
Cutting: Once the tube reaches the desired length on the mandrel, a cutting mechanism (often a rotary cutter or a flying saw) cleanly cuts the continuous tube to a pre-set length without stopping the winding process.
Ejection & Drying: The cut tubes are automatically ejected from the mandrel. They are then conveyed through a drying system (often a multi-tiered conveyor dryer) to cure the adhesive and achieve full strength.
Finishing (Optional): Tubes can be sent for finishing operations like printing, labeling, punching, slotting, or end-capping, depending on their final use.
Unwind Stands: Hold the parent paper rolls.
Automatic Splicer: Ensures continuous operation.
Gluing System: Includes glue tank, rollers, and applicators for precise control.
Mandrel (Spindle): The heart of the machine; defines the inner diameter of the tube.
Cutting Unit: A high-speed, precision cutter (rotary or saw).
Control System (PLC & HMI): A computerized system that controls all parameters like speed, length, glue amount, and tension.
Drying Oven: Cures the adhesive for maximum strength.
There are two primary winding methods:
Spiral Winding Machines:
Description: The paper is wound at a consistent angle (typically 5-85 degrees) to the mandrel axis, creating a spiral seam.
Advantages: Excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good crush resistance, very versatile for a wide range of diameters and lengths.
Applications: The most common type, used for packaging tubes, postal tubes, concrete sonotubes, fabric rolls, and many industrial cores.
Parallel Winding Machines (aka Longitudinal Winding):
Description: The paper is wound parallel to the mandrel axis with a straight seam.
Advantages: Superior bending strength and rigidity, very smooth surface finish.
Applications: Primarily used for high-performance industrial cores that require high torque and minimal deflection, such as cores for plastic films, textiles, foil, and specialty
papers.
The products from these machines are ubiquitous in industry:
Packaging: Mailing and shipping tubes, packaging for posters, maps, and blueprints.
Construction: Sonotubes for concrete pillars, forms for columns.
Textiles: Cores for winding fabrics, yarn, and carpets.
Paper & Film Industry: Cores for winding toilet paper, kitchen rolls, plastic film, foil, and label stock.
Specialty Products: Cores for capacitors, electrical insulation, and fireworks.
