What is a Paper Tube Making Machine?

Paper tube making machine is an industrial device that automatically winds multiple layers of paper (or other web-like materials) onto a mandrel to produce cylindrical paper products. These products are commonly known as paper tubes, paper cores, or

paper cans.

The process involves unwinding paper from rolls, applying adhesive, spirally or parallel winding it around a central mandrel, drying/curing the adhesive, and cutting it to the required length.

Types of Paper Tube Making Machines

There are two primary winding technologies, each suited for different end-products:

1. Spiral Winding Machines

This is the most common type.

  • Process: Multiple narrow strips of paper are fed at a constant angle (typically 70° to 85°) onto a rotating mandrel. This creates a continuous, spirally-wound tube.

  • Characteristics:

    • Seam: Has a visible spiral seam.

    • Strength: Excellent radial (crush) strength and good longitudinal (bending) strength.

    • Flexibility: Can easily produce very long tubes that are later cut to size.

    • Applications: Ideal for products where straightness and crush resistance are key.

      • Cores: For wrapping textiles, films, foils, paper, and labels.

      • Concrete Columns: Sonotubes for construction.

      • Postal Tubes: For shipping documents and posters.

2. Parallel Winding Machines (Convolute Winding)

  • Process: A full-width sheet of paper is wound directly onto a stationary mandrel in the same direction, creating a tube with a straight seam parallel to its axis.

  • Characteristics:

    • Seam: Has a straight, parallel seam.

    • Strength: Superior longitudinal strength and a very smooth, printable surface.

    • Efficiency: Faster for shorter, specific-length tubes.

    • Applications: Ideal for products that need a high-quality finish or specific internal dimensions.

      • Consumer Packaging: Cans for food (chips, coffee, powdered drinks), cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

      • Industrial Cores: For high-speed roll-to-roll processes like printing and converting.

Key Components of a Paper Tube Machine

A typical machine consists of the following main sections:

  1. Unwind Stand: Holds the large rolls of paper (the "parent roll") and controls the tension as the paper is fed into the machine.

  2. Gluing System: Applies a precise amount of adhesive (water-based, hot melt, or synthetic) to the paper layers. This can include pre-coaters and main applicators.

  3. Forming Section (Winding Head): The heart of the machine. Here, the paper is guided and wound around the central mandrel. The number of forming belts and heads determines the number of paper plies and the winding technology (spiral or parallel).

  4. Mandrel: A solid, polished steel shaft that defines the internal diameter of the tube. Mandrels are interchangeable to produce different tube sizes.

  5. Drying/Curing Section: Uses heated air (or sometimes infrared) to quickly dry and set the adhesive, ensuring the tube holds its shape and strength.

  6. Cutting Unit: A flying saw or rotary cutter that precisely cuts the continuous tube into pre-set lengths without stopping the production line.

  7. Control System (PLC/HMI): A computerized programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) touchscreen allow the operator to set all parameters (length, speed, glue amount) and monitor the machine.

Common Applications of Paper Tubes & Cores

The products from these machines are ubiquitous in industry and consumer goods:

  • Industrial Cores: The backbone of roll goods industry (paper, plastic film, textiles, carpets, wire, foil).

  • Packaging:

    • Food and Beverage: Canisters for chips, nuts, coffee, tea, powdered milk.

    • Cosmetics: Tubes for lipstick, lotions, and sample containers.

    • Pharmaceuticals: Containers for tablet strips and powders.
