Machines for Spiral Paper Tube and Roll Making

What These Machines Do?

These machines manufacture the paper cores (or "tubes") that form the central support structure for rolled goods. The "spiral" winding

method provides superior strength and durability, which is essential for withstanding the high tensions involved in modern converting and

unwinding processes.

The Spiral Winding Process: Step-by-Step

  • Unwinding: Large "parent rolls" of paper (e.g., kraft, chipboard) are loaded onto unwind stands. Machines often have 2-4 stands to allow for multi-layer construction, which combines different paper grades for optimal performance and cost.

  • Precision Gluing: Each paper strip passes through a gluing unit that applies a consistent film of adhesive (PVA for standard cores, hot melt for high-speed or water-resistant needs).

  • Spiral Winding: The core of the process. The glued paper is guided onto a stationary mandrel (which defines the tube's inner diameter) at a precise angle (e.g., 45° to 85°). The mandrel rotates, creating the characteristic spiral seam that gives the tube its strength.

  • Forming & Pressing: The wound tube passes under heated pressure rollers or belts. This ensures a tight bond between layers, eliminates air pockets, and creates a smooth, consistent wall thickness crucial for high-speed roll converting.

  • Precision Cutting: Once the tube reaches the pre-set length, a high-speed cutter (a "flying saw" or rotary cutter) slices it without interrupting the winding process.

  • Ejection & Curing: The cut core is ejected and may pass through a drying oven to fully cure the adhesive before it is used in downstream processes.

    Critical Technical Features to Consider

When selecting a machine for making paper tube rolls, focus on these aspects:

    • Mandrel System: Determines the core's ID. Quick-change mandrels are vital for factories producing many core sizes.

    • Gluing System: Must be precise and adaptable. Look for systems that can handle different adhesives (PVA, hot melt) without extensive downtime for changeover.

    • Cutting Mechanism: A flying saw is essential for high-speed production and clean cuts on large-diameter, thick-walled cores.

    • Control System (PLC & HMI): The brain of the machine. Allows for storage of recipes (length, speed, etc.) for different core types, ensuring repeatability and reducing setup time.

    • Drying/Curing System: An integrated oven is necessary for high-speed production to ensure cores are structurally solid before they are used or shipped.

    Applications: The Rolls They Support

The cores produced are used across virtually every industry that deals with rolled materials:

    • Flexible Packaging: Cores for BOPP, CPP, PET films, and laminates.

    • Hygiene & Paper: Cores for toilet paper, paper towels, and industrial kraft rolls.

    • Textiles & Nonwovens: Cores for fabrics, geotextiles, and roll goods.

    • Labeling & Tapes: Cores for pressure-sensitive labels and adhesive tapes.

    • Building Materials: Cores for vinyl siding, flooring, and insulation.
