What is a Toilet Paper Converting Line?

This is a fully integrated production line that takes the large Jumbo Rolls (the output from the tissue paper machine) and converts them into consumer-ready products. The line is a series of synchronized machines that perform embossing, gluing, rewinding, log sawing, and packaging.

The Standard Converting Line Process & Machinery

Here is the step-by-step flow of a typical home product toilet paper manufacturing line:

1. Jumbo Roll Stand (Unwind Stand)

• Purpose: To hold the massive jumbo roll (which can be 2.5 meters wide and weigh over a ton) and feed the paper into the converting line in a controlled manner.

• Key Features: Often has automatic splicing. This allows a new jumbo roll to be seamlessly joined to the end of an expiring one without stopping the production line, which is crucial for efficiency.

2. Ply Bonding & Embossing Unit

This is where the paper gets its softness, texture, and ply structure.

• Embossing: Two engraved steel rolls press against the paper (or two plies of paper) to create a pattern. This does two things:

  1. Improves Softness & Bulk: The embossing pattern breaks up the paper structure, making it feel softer and more absorbent.

  2. Provides Aesthetics: Creates the decorative designs you see on toilet paper.

• Ply Bonding (For 2-Ply & 3-Ply):

  • If producing 2-ply toilet paper, two separate webs of paper are fed into the embosser.

  • After embossing, they pass through a nip roll where a small amount of glue is applied to bond the two plies together. This is why 2-ply toilet paper doesn't separate easily.

3. Rewinding Machine (The Core of Converting)

• Purpose: This machine takes the wide, multi-lane embossed paper and winds it precisely around a cardboard core at extremely high speeds.

• How it Works:

  • The paper is slit into multiple narrow strips (each representing the final width of a toilet roll) by circular knives.

  • Each strip is fed onto its own core.

  • The rewinder winds the paper to a precise diameter, creates a clean "tail" for the final product, and cuts the paper.

• Key Feature: This machine outputs a continuous "log" of toilet paper, where multiple rolls are formed side-by-side. For example, a single log might contain 8-10 individual rolls.

4. Log Saw (Cutting/Sawing Unit)

• Purpose: To cut the long, continuous "log" of toilet paper into individual rolls of the correct length.

• How it Works: A high-speed circular saw blade moves across the log, cutting through all the rolls at once. The spacing of the cuts determines the final length of the toilet paper roll.

5. Packaging Line (Wrapping & Bundling)

This is a multi-stage process itself:

• a) Individual Roll Wrapping:

  • Machine: Automatic Roll Wrapper.

  • Process: Each individual roll is fed into a machine that wraps it in plastic (polyethylene) or paper packaging. This machine applies the branded label, seals the ends, and protects the roll.

• b) Multi-Pack Bundling:

  • Machine: Multi-Pack Wrapper.

  • Process: The individually wrapped rolls are grouped (e.g., into 4, 9, 12, or 24 rolls) and bundled together in a larger plastic shrink wrap or a cardboard sleeve.

• c) Case Packing & Palletizing:

  • Case Packer: Automatically places the multi-packs into shipping cases.

  • Palletizer: Robots or automated arms stack the cases onto pallets for shipment to warehouses and stores.
