The process follows the standard spiral winding method but on a more powerful scale:
Multiple Unwinding: Several large rolls of paperboard are mounted on unwind stands.
Web Guidance: Each paper ply is guided through tension control and glue application stations.
Layered Gluing: Adhesive is applied to each ply (or every other ply, depending on the design) before they converge.
Spiral Winding: All the glued plies are simultaneously wound onto a large, heavy-duty mandrel at a fixed angle.
Forming & Pressure: Steel forming belts apply constant pressure to ensure tight bonding between all layers.
Cutting to Length: The continuous tube is cut to the required length (e.g., 4, 8, or 12 feet for concrete forms).
Curing: The cut tubes travel through a drying oven to achieve full structural strength.
The products from these machines are used in high-strength applications:
Construction:
Sonotubes / Concrete Forming Tubes: The most common application. Used as circular forms for pouring concrete pillars and foundations.
Column Covers: For covering structural steel columns for fire protection and aesthetics.
Industrial Cores:
Heavy-Duty Shipping Cores: For winding steel, wire, cable, and heavy textiles.
Carpet Cores: The thick tubes at the center of rolled carpets.
Packaging:
Heavy-Freight Shipping Tubes: For shipping high-value, fragile industrial parts.
Roll Packaging: For flooring, vinyl, and insulation materials.
