It is a machine that automates the process of taking rolls of heavy-duty paperboard (kraft paper, often recycled or virgin fiber) and transforming them into rigid, protective edge profiles through a series of folding and gluing operations.
The process is continuous and can be summarized in these steps:
Unwinding: A roll of multi-ply kraft paperboard (typically 3-5 plies, 400-1000 GSM) is mounted on an unwind stand.
Pre-creasing: The paper web passes through a scoring/creasing unit. Precise crease lines are made to define the bends for the final L or U shape.
Glue Application: A glue application system (hot melt or cold glue) applies adhesive to specific areas of the inner plies before folding.
Folding & Forming: A series of forming rails and rollers progressively fold the paperboard along the pre-creased lines into the final profile (usually 90° for L-shape).
Pressing & Curing: The folded profile passes through a pressing/curing section where pressure is applied to ensure a strong bond as the glue sets. Hot air drying may be used for some adhesives.
Cutting: A rotary or guillotine cutting unit cuts the continuous profile into pre-set lengths (common lengths are 1.2m to 3.0m, or custom sizes).
Stacking & Output: The finished edge protectors are counted and stacked automatically for bundling and shipping.
Machines are categorized primarily by their level of automation:
Manual/Semi-Automatic Machines:
Require an operator to feed pre-cut sheets of board.
The machine folds and glues them one at a time or in small batches.
Pros: Lower initial investment, suitable for small workshops or custom, low-volume orders.
Cons: High labor cost, slower production speed (e.g., 5-15 pieces per minute).
Fully Automatic Machines:
Process a continuous roll of paperboard from start to finish with minimal human intervention (mainly for roll loading and monitoring).
Pros: High production speed (e.g., 60-150 meters per minute), consistent quality, low labor cost per unit.
Cons: Higher capital cost, requires higher volume to justify investment.
Profile Variants:
L-Shape (90° Angle) Machines: The most common type for standard corner protection.
U-Shape (Channel) Machines: Produce protectors that wrap around an edge on three sides for heavier-duty applications.
Custom Profile Machines: Can be designed for special profiles like J-shapes or complex geometries.
Unwind Stand: Holds the master paper roll, often with tension control and automatic splicing for non-stop operation.
Pre-heating Unit (Optional): Heats the paperboard for better pliability and glue bonding.
Creasing/Slitting Unit: Creates precise fold lines.
Gluing System: Precision nozzles or wheels apply adhesive. Hot melt systems are common for fast setting.
Folding & Forming Section: The heart of the machine, with adjustable guides and rollers.
Main Pressing Section: Ensures tight adhesion and sharp corner definition.
Cutting Unit: Highly synchronized rotary cutter for accurate, burr-free lengths.
PLC Control Panel: The brain of the machine. Modern machines feature touch-screen HMIs for setting length, speed, count, and diagnostics.
Stacking & Bundling Unit: Automatically counts and stacks the output, often with strapping or taping options.
The edge protectors produced are used across industries:
Shipping & Logistics: Protecting palletized goods (boxes, appliances).
Metal & Glass Industry: Protecting edges of sheets, coils, and panels.
Furniture & Wood Products: Protecting corners of tables, cabinets, etc.
Construction: Protecting building materials like gypsum boards, insulation panels.
