It is an industrial machine that manufactures hollow, cylindrical tubes by continuously winding multiple layers of paper or paperboard strips
onto a rotating mandrel at a precise spiral angle. This spiral winding technique is what gives these tubes their exceptional strength, rigidity, and crush resistance.
These machines produce the cores and tubes used in countless everyday products, from the core inside your toilet paper roll to the large forms used for pouring concrete columns.
Unwinding: Large rolls of paper (parent rolls) are loaded onto the machine's unwind stands. A machine often has multiple stands (2-6) to allow for different paper grades (e.g., a recycled outer layer and a smooth, clean inner layer).
Gluing: Each paper strip passes through a precision gluing system, which applies a controlled amount of adhesive (like PVA or hot melt) evenly across its surface.
Spiral Winding: This is the heart of the machine. The glued paper is guided onto a stationary mandrel (a solid steel bar that defines the tube's inner diameter) by a "winding head" or "bridge." As the mandrel rotates, the head guides the paper at a fixed spiral angle (typically 15° to 40°), creating the characteristic spiral seam.
Forming & Pressure: The newly wound tube passes under heated pressure rollers or belts. This step is critical to squeeze out excess glue, eliminate air bubbles, and ensure a tight, smooth, and consistent wall thickness.
Cutting: Once the tube reaches a pre-programmed length, a high-speed cutting mechanism (a rotary cutter or flying saw) slices it cleanly without stopping the production process.
Ejection & Drying: The cut tube is ejected from the end of the mandrel. It may then travel through a drying oven to cure the adhesive quickly or be left to air-dry.
Unwind Stands: Hold the parent paper rolls.
Mandrel: The central shaft that determines the tube's internal diameter.
Gluing System: Includes tanks, pumps, and applicators for precise adhesive control.
Winding Head/Bridge: The complex assembly that guides the paper at the precise spiral angle.
Pressure Rollers/Belts: Apply heat and pressure to consolidate the tube layers.
Cutting System: A high-speed cutter for accurate length separation.
Control Panel (PLC): The computerized brain for setting all parameters (length, speed, etc.).
Drying System (optional): Ovens or infrared dryers to accelerate curing.
Packaging Cores: For plastic films, foil, labels, and adhesive tapes.
Construction: Concrete pouring forms (sonotubes/column forms).
Paper & Hygiene: Cores for toilet paper, paper towels, and kraft paper.
Textiles: Yarn cones and fabric rolls.
Shipping & Storage: Protective mailing tubes for posters, documents, and blueprints.
